Football is back in Corvallis as Oregon State opens the 2024 season on Saturday, welcoming the Idaho State Bengals into town for the first time since 2016.

This week's game will air on the CW while BeaverBlitz staff will be hosting live in game coverage in The Lodge for members of BeaverBlitz.

GAME NOTES:

  • Oregon State opens its 2024 schedule Saturday when the Beavers host Idaho State at Reser Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. PT.
  • The game marks the debut for Trent Bray as Oregon State's head coach. He is in his first season as head coach and 10th year overall at Oregon State.

AGAINST IDAHO STATE:

  • Oregon State is 2-0 all-time against Idaho State, winning a 2007 matchup 61-10 and then picking up a 37-7 victory in 2016.
  • The Beavers tallied 607 yards of offense in the 2007 win, the ninth-most ever by Oregon State. The 61 points, meanwhile, were the 14th-most at the time. Oregon State, however, has eclipsed the 61-point mark four times since.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 4: Home games in the first five matchups of the season for the Beavers. Oregon State last played four of its first five games in Corvallis in 2006, going 3-2.
  • 4: Oregon State alums on the 2024 coaching staff (not including grad assistants), making the Beavers one of six FBS teams nationally with that distinction.
  • 7: Home games overall for the Beavers in 2024, the most since the 2016 Beavers went 4-3.
  • 9:Consecutive wins against FCS opponents. OSU has out-scored FCS opponents by an average of 29.9 points per game since 2012.

  • 44: Career starts by Joshua Gray, tied for ninth-most in Oregon State history

IN THE BOOTH:

  • Coaches in the press box this season include offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ryan Gunderson and defensive coordinator Keith Heyward.
  • The two will be joined by graduate assistants Tristan Gebbia (offense), Kayden Lyles (offense) and Kuony Deng (defense). Defensive quality control staffer Kharyee Marshall will also be in the booth.

ON THIS DATE:

  • Oregon State has played on Aug. 31 just twice in its history, both against Eastern Washington. The Beavers were 56-17 winners in 2006, but lost 49-46 in 2013.
  • Offensive coordinator Ryan Gunderson completed a 9-yard pass in the 2006 win while offensive line coach Kyle DeVan started at center.

VERSUS THE FCS

  • Oregon State, since 1999, has played 21 games against FCS opponents, going 19-2. OSU has won nine consecutive matchups.
  • The Beavers are averaging 44.3 points per game versus FCS foes, allowing 16.3.
  • Oregon State has scored 30 or more points in 16 of those 21 matchups

SEASON/HOME OPENER

  • Oregon State is looking to make it three consecutive wins to open the season for the first time since 2005, 2006 and 2007. The Beavers defeated Boise State, 34-17, to open the 2022 season, then won at San Jose State, 42-17, to open 2023.
  • OSU, meanwhile, is looking to make it four straight home-opening wins after defeating Hawai'i (45-27) in 2021, Boise State in 2022 and UC Davis (55-7) to open 2023.
  • OSU last won four straight home openers from 2014 to 2018 when doing so in five straight.

  • Oregon State helmets are shifting from matte to gloss to pay homage to our storied past with a nod to tradition and a touch of timeless elegance.

BRAY TAKES OVER

  • Trent Bray is in his first year as Oregon State's head coach, taking over the title in November 2023.
  • Bray is in his 10th season at Oregon State, and second stint. He coached at OSU from 2012-14 before going to Nebraska for the 2015 season. He returned to Corvallis in 2018 and was elevated to defensive coordinator in November 2021.
  • Bray played at Oregon State from 2002- 05, and left with 337 tackles. He started the last 34 games of his career and was a 2005 All-Pac-10 First Team selection.
  • Trent Bray is one of 18 coaches nationally who are coaching at their alma mater or university they played at during their collegiate careers.

STAFF TIES TO OREGON STATE

  • The Oregon State coaching staff may generally be new but also has a great deal of connections to Oregon State.
  • Head coach Trent Bray hired Ryan Gunderson (lettered 2004-07) to serve as offensive coordinator and Keith Heyward (1997-2000) as defensive coordinator. The two both played for and graduated from Oregon State. Kyle DeVan, meanwhile, lettered from 2004-07 and graduated from OSU. He is the team's offensive line coach.
  • Jon Boyer, now coaching tight ends, was elevated after serving in quality control and as a senior advisor since 2018. He was the Beavers' offensive coordinator in the Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl.
  • Jamie Christian, special teams coordinator, was a defensive graduate assistant at Oregon State from 2000-01. He was a part of the coaching staff at the 2001 Fiesta Bowl.
  • AJ Cooper is back in Corvallis after one year at Sacramento State. He served as a defensive graduate assistant for the Beavers in 2021 and 2022.
  • Kefense Hynson has been the team's wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator since 2018, serving as interim head coach at the Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl.
  • Ilaisa Tuiaki is in his second stint at Oregon State. Now the defensive line coach, he served as an assistant coach for linebackers and special teams in 2015.
  • Offensive graduate assistant Tristan Gebbia played for OSU from 2018-22, and defensive GA Avery Roberts played 29 games for OSU, earning All-American honors in 2021. They're joined by Kayden Lyles, who was a GA for OSU In 2023.

MORE ON THE STAFF

  • Oregon State has two assistant coaches who do not have direct ties to Oregon State, but who are familiar with the program.
  • Rod Chance, secondary coach, comes to Corvallis and fomerly squared off with the Beavers while at Colorado (2022) and Oregon (2018, 2020-21).
  • Thomas Ford is in his first season as running backs coach. He was in offensive quality control for Washington from 2020-21.
  • Additionally, Kuony Deng is a defensive graduate assistant. He played at California and recorded 10 tackles versus OSU in 2019, and four in 2020.

ABOUT THOSE ALUMS

  • Oregon State is one of just two teams nationally to have its head coach, offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator as alums.
  • OSU is joined by Air Force, whom the Beavers will play at in November. The Falcons' alums include Troy Calhoun (head coach), Mike Thiessen (offensive coordinator) and Brian Knorr (defensive coordinator).
  • Per research done by Utah, OSU is one of six FBS schools nationally who have four or more alums on their full-time coaching staff.
  • The Beavers join Air Force (seven), Utah (five), Fresno State (four), Georgia Southern (four) and Hawai'i (four).

CAPTAINS

  • Oregon State head coach Trent Bray announced the Beavers' 2024 team captains a week before the opener versus Idaho State. There are six captains this season.
  • Four come from the defensive side of the ball. They include defensive lineman Semisi Saluni, inside linebacker Melvin Jordan IV and defensive backs Skyler Thomas and Jaden Robinson
  • Two are on offense: quarterback Ben Gulbranson and offensive lineman Joshua Gray.
  • Gray is a captain for the second consecutive season.

AT HOME

  • Oregon State is 16-2 at home since 2021 and the stats indicate a good reason why.
  • The Beavers have scored 30 or more points 11 times over that stretch, and have a perfect 11-0 mark when that happens. Conversely, opponents have scored 20 or less 12 times, and the Beavers are 11-1 when that happens. The lone loss was a 17-14 defeat to USC in 2022
  • OSU has surpassed 400 yards of offense in 10 of those 18 games, going 10-0. Opponents, meanwhile, have been held to under 400 yards 14 times, and OSU is 12-2. Ironically, the Beavers are 4-0 when opponents have topped 400 yards.
  • The Beavers have surpassed 500 yards twice; in 2021 vs. Hawai'i, picking up 558, and 2023 against Stanford, finishing with 598.
