Luciano Pavarotti, unique music figure in XX century and heavenly tenore singer, was born on 12th of October 1935. Unfortunatelly he's no longer with us, but there's (luckily) many of his recordings, as is this unbelievable finale of the second act of Verdi's opera ''Ernani'' - rarely heard these days and so hard for tenore, but Pavarotti was the one. And if you close your eyes, you'll always recognize his voice among hundreds. That was his gift from God.

Kaija Saariaho, prominent Finish contemporary composer, was born on this day in 1952. Unfortunatelly, we've lost her in 2023. Here is one fine example of her music writing, second movement - ''Winter Sky'' - from her orchestral composition called ''Orion''. Judge for yourself.

On 14th of October 1843 was a premiere performance of incidental music for Shakespeare's play ''A Midsummer Night's Dream'' by Felix Mendelssohn. That was a comission of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia for the theater in new palace in Potsdam. Mendelssohn was a music director of the King's Academy of the Arts and of Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra those days. Mendelssohn wrote the overture in 1826 and incorporated it to this, newly composed 14 numbers for play. Here is enchanting, sprightly chattering ''Scherzo'', one of the highlights of this music gem. Enjoy.

On 13th of October 1910 was born one of the greatest (if not the greatest) jazz pianists in history - Art Tatum. With almost no match in technic and invention, he was ''notorious'' among pianists. Here is his famous rendering of a theme ''Tiger rag''. Enjoy.

Today is a birthday to the one of the greatest musicians and composers in rock era, Paul Simon, who was born on 13th of October 1941. From the glory days with Simon & Garfunkel till today, his opus was always high in standards, innovative and actual. Listen to this awesome live performance of his theme ''Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes'', from The African Concert in 1987. Enjoy.

Antonio Pasculli, legendary XIX century Italian oboist (Paganini of oboe) and composer, was born on 13th of October 1842. He was a great forerunner of modern oboe technics - in breathing, tonguing and neck-breaking technical playing. Here is excellent example in his ''Concerto for oboe & orchestra on themes from Donizetti's opera La Favorita'' in appalling performance of my dear colleague, maestro Francois Leleux. Enjoy.
